DCSO officer suffers non-life threatening injuries after officer involved shooting

GARDNERVILLE, Nev. (KOLO) – Updated at 11:17 am: The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office releases new information about an officer involved in the shooting.

They say officers responded Thursday to the 1200 block of Pit Road in the Gardnerville Ranchos for reports of a domestic violence incident involving a firearm.

The caller told dispatch that her son, John Brown, attacked her with a gun and fled on foot and attempted to steal a car from an uninvolved person on Pit Road. She also told police that Brown appeared to be accompanied by another person.

Police say Brown was unsuccessful in his attempts to steal a car, and both he and another person fled on foot toward Tillman Lane.

The DCSO found Brown sitting in a car on Short Court just before 2 a.m. Responding officers say they saw what appeared to be a gun on his lap when they approached him.

Officers ordered Brown out of his car when they say he pointed a gun at officers, prompting them to open fire and strike Brown several times. One officer injured his hand and was taken to hospital.

Brown was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting. The person with Brown was identified as a 16-year-old boy. He was arrested on theft charges and booked into the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center.

The shooting, attempted armed vehicle theft and assault are all being investigated by the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and Nevada State Police. All deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending review by the Douglas County District Attorney’s office.
