School Identifies Teen Killed in House Explosion; NTSB is now investigating

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah – The 15-year-old boy killed in this week’s South Jordan house explosion has been identified by his school as Logan Hansen. Bingham High School shared Hansen’s name in a social media post announcing a vigil planned for Friday.

Local fire investigators have determined that a natural gas leak caused Wednesday’s explosion.

The vigil will take place at the school from 6.30pm, with a moment of silence at 7pm. Those participating are asked to wear blue.

Also on Friday, the National Transportation Safety Board said it was investigating the explosion, but provided no additional details.

The day after the incident, the seriousness of what happened in their backyard began to dawn on the neighbors.

“Just terrible devastation,” said neighbor Carol Lee Doramus, who lives a few blocks away.

Doramus said she heard a loud explosion and couldn’t imagine what it was until her daughter told her what happened.

“What you notice is that the house… isn’t there,” she added. “And I looked up and it looks like a refrigerator up there on the pile. And I can’t imagine losing everything I own, my kids’ pictures, things like that.”

In an update from South Jordan Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Lessner, a gas leak was determined to be the cause of the fire and explosion.

The source of the leak is still under investigation.

Sami Davis says she worked for the family as a babysitter and nanny for almost a decade.

“My mother called me and said there had been a fire or some other incident in that neighborhood and we knew the family lived there,” Davis said.

Davis says she and her mother went to the house.

“Then we realized it was the home of the family we knew and that I knew,” Davis said.

Davis told FOX 13 News the 15-year-old boy who was killed was about two to three years old when she started working for the family.

“When he was little he was happy and as a pre-teen he was a normal pre-teen, but happy too,” Davis said. “His personality was that he always laughed at things and he was still a kid, just like any other kid.”

Neighbors gathered around the boy’s family, leaving a few blue ribbons hanging from a fence that now stands in front of the spot where the house once stood.

“I couldn’t imagine that,” said neighbor David Llewellyn. “My heart, our hearts, my wife and I, go out to the family.”

As the sun set Thursday, blue lights could be seen on trees and nearby homes. We were told that blue was the boys’ favorite color.

“We dropped off a bunch of clothes for all the kids and parents and tried to find things to keep them warm,” Davis said.

For Davis, she addressed what saddens her most about this tragic incident.

“I won’t be able to see milestones like that anymore as he gets older,” Davis said. “It also just makes me sad for his family who can’t be there, and for anyone whose life might have been touched by his, and, you know, when I think about all the different friends he could have made and I think that he would have been a light in their lives.”

FOX 13 News asked Davis Thursday if the family wanted anything she would share or say on their behalf.

She told us that now they just want their privacy to be respected. Davis went on to say that the family is very grateful for all the support and efforts the community around them is making.

Mayor Dawn Ramsey said in a city release that the family has requested privacy following the incident.

“Our community has experienced an unimaginable tragedy with the death of one of our residents after their family home exploded yesterday,” Ramsey wrote. “Our hearts are broken as we grieve alongside family, friends, neighbors and all who are grieving during this crisis. devastating time.”

A GoFundMe page was established to assist the family with the purchase of food and clothing, and to cover funeral costs.

Heartbroken over what happened, those living in the South Jordan neighborhood, like Doramus, believe they will all get through this week’s tragedy together.

“We have the most beautiful neighborhood I’ve ever lived in and I’ve lived here a long time. People come and go, but we’re always here to help.”
