Garcia criticizes media for ‘unfair’ reporting

CEBU CITY — Acting Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia criticized local media for their “unfair” reporting on the ongoing Palarong Pambansa, especially on the problems faced by delegates in their accommodation quarters.

Garcia accused the media of sensationalizing problems such as limited water supplies and malfunctioning toilets in public schools where delegates from the 17 regions are housed.

The acting mayor expressed frustration that these reports overshadow the city’s efforts to ensure the event’s success.

“For example, when it comes to reporting on accommodation areas, if a reservoir runs out of water, is it a miracle if the water level immediately rises? We still have to refill the water reservoirs,” Garcia said, noting the practical challenges of maintaining water supply for a large-scale event.

Garcia called on the media to “provide balanced coverage that recognizes both the positive aspects and the challenges of organizing an event of this magnitude.”

“Good news is good news. Good news is good news,” he said.

Jean-Paul Gélasque, head of the Department of Public Services, urged the media to avoid sensationalizing minor issues and to recognize the efforts of city staff.

“Let’s be fair to people who are doing their job,” he said.

In response, the Cebu chapter of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) issued a statement saying journalists aim to contextualize reports and do not actively seek out issues to sensationalize.

“We appreciate the government’s effort to provide clarity on the issue, but it is the duty of the media to contextualize and report the concerns of the stakeholders as well,” the statement said.

The NUJP also cited restrictions on coverage of Palarong Pambansa after several local media field reporters said they were not allowed to cover several gambling venues.

Meanwhile, Kimberly Esmeña, head of the Housing and Accommodation Committee and the Cebu City Local School Board, explained that problems such as crowded comfort rooms were due to improper disposal of tissues and napkins by delegates.

Despite these challenges, Esmeña assured that staff are working around the clock to ensure that any problems are resolved quickly.

“There will always be concerns, but the most important thing is that we can react very quickly,” she said.
