Luke Doty: South Carolina QB room remains an active competition

There is a changing of the guard at quarterback for Caroline from the south after two years of departure Spencer Rattler was selected in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints. He leaves behind a lot of responsibility after having two impressive seasons for the Gamecocks.

Luc Doty made six starts at quarterback during his career at South Carolina, listed as an athlete on the team’s website who also made starts at wide receiver and contributed on special teams. But this year’s offseason quarterback battle was headlined by LaNorris Sellers And Robby Ashford. Two signal callers who differ in experience but not potential in the Gamecocks’ offense.

“So it’s an active competition right now, LaNorris Sellers is the guy coming out of the spring but like coach Beamer said, it’s still a competition,” Doty said. “LaNorris still has to do a great job of continuing to improve, leading the offense and the team.”

Sellers is entering his second season with the Gamecocks, having been redshirted last year after appearing in just three games where he completed all four of his pass attempts for 86 yards and a touchdown. He also brings running ability to the table as a 6-foot-3, 242-inch athlete who rushed for 51 yards and a score on his limited snaps last season.

Ashford also has dual-threat capabilities and more experience than Sellers, appearing in 22 games in his college career with 10 starts. But regardless of who wins the starting job, Doty and the Gamecocks are confident in whoever gets the nod as QB1. They’re excited about the positive environment in South Carolina’s quarterback room.

“But yeah, we have guys in this room that no matter who’s on the floor, they’re going to be able to succeed and win games. But at the same time, everybody in this room supports each other,” Doty explained.

“Like I said, no matter who’s on the field, he’s going to have everybody’s support. Everybody on the team, everybody in the quarterback room, everybody’s supportive and wants to see each other succeed.”

After an eight-win season under Shane BeamerLast year, South Carolina fell to 5-7 and missed its first bowl game since he took over the program. Now he’s hoping a new face at quarterback can help the program return to its previous success and beyond in 2024.
