For months, St. Pete Beach has been in political turmoil. After four of five city commissioners resigned, the city appointed interim commissioners. In March, interim commissioners from Districts 1 and 3 ran unopposed in the general election. As the city prepares for the 2025 general election, it plans to hold a special election on Aug. 20. The nonpartisan race pits current interim commissioner Nick Filtz against his challenger Lisa Robinson.

Filtz was appointed to the commission in December as an interim commissioner. He has lived in St. Pete Beach and worked as a real estate agent for 20 years.

According to his presentation video on the city’s website, “I applied for the position of City Commissioner because I wanted to become more involved in our community and contribute to the future of our city, and create a place that my son and his future family will want to return to after college. As Commissioner, I want to focus on positivity and unity in our community between our residents and the city. While encouraging greater support for local small businesses and small business owners.”

Robinson has lived in St. Pete Beach for 35 years, where she has served as an event coordinator, operations producer and technical manager. In her application, she highlights her experience in business development, marketing and planning.

“I am a creative, detail-oriented, and excellent communicator with strong negotiation, multitasking, and follow-up skills,” she wrote in her application.

The outcome of this election does not change the March 2025 general election. If the elected commissioner wishes to run in March, he or she must requalify. To learn more, visit votepinellas.gov.

The Gabber Journal The Liberal Party has contacted both candidates to offer voters a televised debate. So far, only Robinson has responded that she will attend. If both candidates do not participate, we will still hold the televised debate.
