Two stray dogs arrested by AVS after allegedly attacking cats, showing aggression

SINGAPORE — The Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS) has captured two stray dogs that allegedly killed dozens of community cats and displayed aggressive behaviour towards residents.

In a press release issued on Friday (Sept 15), AVS said it was alerted to the sighting of three dogs running loose at Fernvale Lane in Sengkang on Sept 8.

There have been reports of dogs behaving aggressively towards residents in the neighborhood.

After capturing two of the three dogs, AVS observed that they resembled those that had previously been reported to attack cats in several areas, including Ang Mo Kio.

AVS is currently caring for the dogs and will work with animal welfare group partners to rehome them.

Previous attacks by a pack of stray dogs

Two cats from the Toa Payoh community recently fell victim to the pack of dogs.

According to a coordinator of the informal animal welfare group Kim Keat Cats, following a fatal attack by one of the cats on Aug 24, AVS had mobilised a team to patrol Kim Keat’s estate in Toa Payoh.

AVS Community Animal Management Group director Dr Chang Siow Foong had previously said the group would step up surveillance and continue targeted trapping operations in northern Singapore.

Previous reports had shown the dogs roamed widely, were elusive and avoided traps.

Two dead cats were also found in Woodleigh in late April this year.

Kim Keat Cats thanked AVS, Cat Welfare Society, and other animal welfare groups and agencies for listening to the concerns raised by rescuers and independent feeders and acting on the feedback.

The group told AVS they wished the dogs no harm and hoped they could be rehabilitated and rehomed.
