ILEARN results show some growth, but plenty of room for improvement

(Indianapolis, IN) – Recent ILEARN standardized test results show that Indiana students have improved somewhat in math, but not so much in English.

Third- through eighth-graders tested in the spring showed a statistically nonsignificant overall improvement in English Language Arts (ELA) of 0.3 percent. Third- and eighth-graders declined slightly in language arts.

The pressure is on to keep young readers up to date on progress. Lawmakers have set a goal of reaching a 95% reading proficiency rate by 2027. Recent legislation requires third-graders to pass a reading test or be held back. Results have been poor in recent years, since the introduction of the new ILEARN format in 2019, followed by learning disruptions caused by the pandemic. Under these circumstances, the Indiana Department of Education is using 2021 as the baseline for recent statistics.

In mathematics, although results have not improved much compared to last year, there has been a clear improvement over the last three years. Average results in mathematics have increased by 3.8%; results in sixth grade have increased by more than 5%.

Overall, only 41% of Hoosier elementary students are meeting or exceeding proficiency standards in each subject. The results also show that nearly 62% of students are below standards in social studies.
