The USD 480 school board is set for a quiet evening at its next meeting Monday night starting at 6:30 p.m. Monday’s meeting will be held in Room B110 at Seymour Rogers High School at 721 Griffith Ave.

The first item on the agenda will be discussion of Resolution M regarding the adoption of the district’s organizational chart for the 2024-2025 school year, which staff is recommending the board approve.

The next item on the agenda will be the discussion on the renewal of the cafeteria software.

“USD 480 uses Linq for the food service point of sale system, order processing, inventory, production records, menu planning, etc.,” the agenda states. “This year’s price represents a 6% increase over last year’s renewal of $19,380, and staff recommends that the board approve Linq’s invoice in the amount of $20,633.75.”

The next item on the agenda will be the discussion on pest control services.

“Bids of $480 were solicited for pest control services for the 2024-25 school year, and the following bids were received: Davis Pest Control of Liberal for $19,495 and Rine Exterminating of Liberal for $18,985,” the agenda states. “Staff recommends that the board approve the bid from Rine Exterminating for $18,985.”

The next item on the council’s agenda will be the issue of the sign language interpreter contract. This issue was raised before the council at its June 10 meeting.

“With the recent enrollment of a hearing-impaired student in our district for the 2023-24 school year, it is imperative that we create a dedicated sign language interpreter position that will be available beginning in the 2024-25 school year,” Special Education Director Dane Parcel noted at the June 10 meeting. “This role will ensure effective communication between the student, teachers and peers, facilitating their full participation in classroom activities, extracurricular activities and school events.”

“Sign language interpretation is a necessity to assist a $480 student who requires interpretation services as part of the Individualized Education Program (IEP). Mr. Robert Loredo is a certified Satanta Sign Language Interpreter and is willing to provide interpretation services on a daily basis,” the agenda states. “The development of the contract was supported and reviewed by the Legal Department for $480, and staff recommends that the board approve the sign language contract with Robert Loredo for the 2024-25 school year.”

The next step for the board will be to discuss vape detectors in USD 480 school buildings, for informational purposes only.

“There are currently 64 vape detectors in service at Eisenhower Middle School, Seymour Rogers Middle School and Liberal High School,” the agenda states. “The district purchased 12 detectors in October 2024, 12 more in November 2024 and 45 more on February 20, for a total of 69 detectors, at a cost of $56,617 with a five-year subscription contract.”

The conclusion of the meeting will be the discussion on the purchase of iPads for the Bright Start Early Learning Center.

“The Bright Start Early Learning Center’s iPads were purchased in 2015 and no longer support the applications staff need. The iPads are used to administer MyIGDIs assessments,” the agenda states. “The test administrator and the student being assessed each require one, and staff has requested four iPads per class to expedite the process. Staff recommends that the board approve the purchase of 40 iPads from Apple for $14,320.”
