IT union criticises HCL’s new leave policy: Rediff Moneynews

IT workers’ union NITES has criticised HCL Technologies’ new policy that links leave to office attendance, calling it unfair and urging the company to reconsider its decision. The policy mandates at least 12 days of office attendance per month to be eligible for leave.

New Delhi, July 21 (PTI) IT workers’ union NITES has criticised a recent decision by HCL Technologies to link employees’ leave to office attendance, calling it “unfair”, and asked the technology company to reconsider the policy.

HCLTech declined to comment on the matter.

The Emerging Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) said the policy, which requires employees to work in the office at least three days a week and at least 12 days a month to be eligible for leave, is “unfair”.

“Such a policy is not only unfair but also goes against the principles of a healthy work-life balance,” NITES President Harpreet Singh Saluja said in a statement.

According to the NITES statement, under Indian labour laws, particularly the Shops and Establishments Act, any change in leave policy must be done in consultation with employees.

“In the post-pandemic era, flexible work arrangements have become the norm, and imposing such rigid requirements is a step backward,” NITES said, asking HCL Technologies to reconsider its policy and ensure that employee well-being is a priority.
