Desperate Yankees reportedly willing to trade top prospect

Desperate Yankees reportedly willing to trade top prospect

The Yankees have reportedly been reluctant to involve Jones in previous trade talks for big players like Corbin Burnes and Dylan Cease. However, the Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers would require huge packages in deals involving Crochet or Skubal, respectively.

Recent struggles have exposed the flaws in the Yankees’ roster, particularly at the pitching level. It appears the Bombers are finally ready to exhaust the farm system to ensure 2024 is a winning season in the Bronx.

Yankees reportedly close to trading Spencer Jones

Jones is currently ranked as New York’s second-best prospect according to MLB Pipeline. The outlet also ranks him 74th overall.th-best prospect in all of MLB. The 6’6″ outfielder had plenty of pedigree after being drafted 25th in the 2022 MLB Draft overall rankings.Aar

The Yankees have reportedly been hesitant to trade Jones because of his star potential. Plus, his expected production at cheap salaries would pair well with expensive outfielders Aaron Judge and possibly Juan Soto through the end of the decade.

Although he continued his college career in professional baseball right after the draft, Jones has struggled at the higher levels. This season, the 23-year-old is hitting .238/.316/.403 with 10 homers and 127 strikeouts in 75 Double-A games. That follows a poor showing in 17 Double-A games last year.

Despite the struggles, Jones still possesses high potential and solid trade value. His pedigree and past success helped him earn a spot on the American League roster for last week’s 2024 All-Star Futures Game. Jones even started the game in right field and batted fifth in the lineup. He recorded a walk and a stolen base in two plate appearances in the game.

Yankees’ Desperation Could Lead to Major Deal

Expectations are incredibly high in the Bronx this season. Anything less than a deep postseason run would be considered unacceptable. In fact, many are viewing the season as a make-or-break World Series season.

Even if the Yankees don’t want to trade a potential future star like Jones, the organization knows it desperately needs to get out of its bad patch. Trading for an impact talent will hurt, but the Yankees need to make a significant move, or more than one, at this year’s trade deadline.
