Costantino Nivola’s works arrive at the Drawing Room

From July 26 to September 16, the Drawing Room will host an exhibition of works by Costantino Nivola (1911-1988). Nivola was a sculptor of Sardinian origin who emigrated to New York in 1938 and quickly became central to the legendary generation of artists who gathered in the East End in the mid-20th century.

The exhibition will highlight sculpted concrete sculptures, sand reliefs, and a polychrome fresco from the 1950s and 1960s, as well as the classic marble and bronze forms the artist created in the 1980s. Nivola’s approach to each medium is unified by his iconic distillation of the human form into timeless abstractions.

From the chiseled and molded Cubist forms that characterized the early exhibited works to the sensuous silhouettes of his elegant late sculptures, Nivola produced an influential and enduring body of work that is represented in international museums and private collections. Many monumental reliefs and sculptures commissioned in collaboration with leading modernist architects are held in public buildings throughout the United States.

The gallery is open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday from 11am to 5pm and Sunday from noon to 4pm. An illustrated exhibition catalog is available online at drawingroom-gallery.com.
