A British woman was stabbed during an ambush by a robber in the Costa Brava coastal region of northeast Spain, it has been reported.

She was with a group when the attack happened in the early hours of Monday in the resort of Lloret de Mar.

A masked robber ambushed her and another UK tourist, separating them from the group.

They demanded money and valuables but are understood to have refused to comply.

A fight ensued between the three and the woman was stabbed, suffering a deep wound.

Local news website Lloret Gaceta said the victim was “bleeding profusely” when police arrived to take him to a nearby hospital in the town of Blanes.

A suspect was later arrested near the scene on suspicion of robbery and stabbing.

A cell phone belonging to the tourists was recovered during detention.

It comes just days after a British couple tried to defend themselves from a mugger on the island of Magaluf over a designer watch worth more than £67,000.

Police in several parts of Spain have created specialized groups to combat brand watch thieves, who usually come from Naples, Italy, North Africa or Eastern Europe.

Tennis star Grigor Dimitrov fell victim to gangs dealing in designer watch robberies in April last year.

The 33-year-old Bulgarian had a £62,000 watch ripped off his wrist in his car as he returned from training ahead of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell tournament.
