“The successful candidates emerged from a pool of talented students who participated in the pen and paper national qualifying examination on July 28, 2024,” DoST Region 2 said in a statement.

Among the 105 qualifiers, 37 were selected under Republic Act (RA) 7687, 45 under the Merit Program and 23 under RA 10612.

“This further strengthens the Cagayan Valley region’s position as a key contributor to the country’s scientific and technological workforce,” DoST Region 2 added.

The JLSS program comprises three types of scholarships.

Firstly, the RA 7687 scholarship is intended for academically gifted students from economically disadvantaged families, ensuring that financial challenges do not impede access to a quality education.

Second, the Merit Program serves students who demonstrate exceptional aptitude in science and mathematics and who wish to pursue careers in these critical areas.

Lastly, RA 10612 is a special course that focuses on training future educators who will teach science and mathematics at the secondary level in support of the government’s Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 or RA 10533.

This program plays a vital role in responding to the country’s growing need for qualified science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, teachers.

The DoST noted that in terms of provincial distribution, those qualified come from various parts of the region.

Producing the highest number with 53 qualifiers is the province of Cagayan, followed by Isabela with 37, Nueva Vizcaya with 11, Quirino with 3 and Batanes with one.

“This geographic distribution underscores the reach and impact of DoST-SEI’s scholarship efforts in promoting a solid foundation for science and technology education throughout Cagayan Valley,” DoST said.

DoST Region 2 will issue all qualifiers with a formal Notice of Award, along with details about the upcoming fellowship orientation, which will outline the policies and procedures governing their grants.

It added that those with outstanding documentary requirements will receive notifications to submit the necessary documents by October 25, 2024.

Meanwhile, the JLSS scholarship offers generous benefits to fellows, including a monthly stipend of P8,000 and P10,000 for learning materials and connectivity allowance.

The DoST said these benefits will begin from the beginning of the first semester of the academic year 2024-2025, “ensuring that scholars are fully equipped to excel in their studies and contribute significantly to the country’s scientific community.”

According to the DoST, the influx of new JLSS scholars further reinforces the region’s reputation as a “fertile ground for scientific talent, contributing to national development by cultivating a new generation of science and technology professionals.”

“These academics are expected to play a critical role in advancing innovation and addressing the country’s most pressing challenges in the coming years,” the DoST said.
