MPUMALANGA – One person was killed and nine others seriously injured in a head-on collision on the R40.

The The accident took place on the R40 near Church Unlimited in Mbombela and forced the road to be partially closed for a time.

Following the incident, one lane towards Mbombela was closed and a stop-and-go system was introduced to keep traffic flowing.

Three vehicles were involved in the accident

Martin Jeffrey of Emer-G-Med, who was at the scene, stated that they received a call and discovered that an LDV had collided head-on with a VW.

Another vehicle then crashed into the back of the VW.

Baby among the injured

Nine others were also seriously injured in the accident. One of the injured was a six-month-old baby.

“The other patients were transported by various emergency vehicles to Rob Ferreira Hospital and Mediclinic Nelspruit for further medical care,” Jeffrey said.

“The cause of the accident is currently unknown,” he added.

The road has now been cleared and traffic can flow smoothly again.

Four killed in crash in September

The stretch of road is no stranger to fatal accidents.

In September 2024, four people were killed when a truck collided with a SUV. One of the victims was a small child.

All victims were burned beyond recognition after the vehicles caught fire.
