ATF is urging places of worship in Mass., RI, to remain vigilant after an increase in arsons

PROVIDENCE – Federal agents are warning churches in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts of possible arsons and recommending places of worship be on high alert.

Houses of worship have seen increasing incidents of arson, prompting the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to urge greater vigilance. The ATF also recommends improving surveillance and security systems at facilities in Franklin and Kingston, Massachusetts, and Woonsocket, RI.

The news comes just weeks after a firework was deliberately placed indoors St. Mary’s Church in Franklinwhich caused extensive smoke damage. An estimated $1 million in repairs are needed due to the damage, Rev. Bob Poitras told CBS News.

St. Mary’s was a case of arson and there is a $10,000 reward at stake for information leading to the arrest of whoever started the fire. The fire also forced the delay of a funeral mass for a former high priest in residence.

There are no other specific threats at this time, ATF said in the alert released this weekend.

The ATF is also warning houses of worship to limit access to facilities and increase awareness among parishioners. The agency advised religious institutions to improve their lighting around the grounds and immediately report suspicious activity to local police and ATF.
