GOP Polling Guru Frank Luntz Explains Major ‘Turnaround’ in Presidential Campaign and How Entire Voting Blocs ‘Collapsed’

GOP pollster Frank Luntz said Donald Trump is committing “political suicide” as entire voting blocs collapsed in favor of Kamala Harris, sparking a major shift in the campaign.

Luntz explained Wednesday morning on CNBC’s Squawk Box that Harris is relying on support from swing voters, who have largely “collapsed” in her favor.

“The entire electoral pool has changed,” Luntz told hosts Andrew Ross Sorkin and Melissa Lee.

The pollster blamed the shift on Trump’s campaign choices, saying the former president was losing momentum.

“It’s like he’s lost control,” Luntz said. “And I know there are billionaires who watch this show and spend a lot of money on Donald Trump, and they don’t understand why he’s committing political suicide.”

GOP pollster Frank Luntz told CNBC’s Squawk Box hosts that if the general election were held today, Kamala Harris would beat Donald Trump.

At the beginning of the interview, Ross Sorkin observed that “polls in the presidential race show Vice President Harris gaining ground in some key states and even eroding some of former President Trump’s lead in Florida.”

He continued: “Our next guest says that if the election were held today, she would win.”

Ross Sorkin, visibly surprised, joked: “That’s a twist.”

“It’s more than that,” Luntz replied.

“It’s a plot twist,” Ross Sorkin joked.

“It’s bringing out people who aren’t interested in voting for Trump or Biden. So the whole voter base has changed,” the veteran pollster said.

Luntz then explained that if things stayed that way, Democrats could win more than just the White House. They could also take the Senate and the House of Representatives.

“She’s got intensity now,” the polling guru said of Harris. “She’s got an intensity advantage. She’s got a demographic advantage.”

At this point, host Melissa Lee stepped in and asked how he expected that advantage to translate into votes.

“How big is that number? That little bit of extra voters that she brings in? I mean, how much does that change the electoral pool?”

“One percent. Maybe two,” Luntz replied. “But that’s enough.”

Ross Sorkin then hesitated and questioned the GOP strategist on the accuracy of his polling information.

Luntz said conditions, such as immigration and security issues, favor Trump in the election.

“There was an interesting report yesterday showing that if you look at where Donald Trump was in terms of what the polls showed in 2016, it underestimated, you know, even in 2020, it underestimated,” Ross Sorkin said.

He continued: “And so you start thinking about the margin of error or where she might be a percentage point ahead. But is the Trump vote fully counted?”

Luntz responded to Sorkin’s concerns by saying that his process is not “just doing the math.”

“It’s also about doing focus groups to listen, to understand why people feel that way.”

The veteran pollster later revealed that his focus groups were regularly “interrupted by young women saying, ‘I’m not voting for him again.'”

He attributed the phenomenon to a “general shift” in voting blocs.

“The undecided people all went to Harris. The people who were weak on Trump all went to the undecideds,” Luntz said.

He continued: “I’m trying to do a focus group tonight with undecided voters under 27 for a major media outlet. And I can’t recruit young women for that because they don’t exist as undecided voters.”

As Harris continues to gain ground, Trump continues to make poor strategic decisions, according to Luntz.

“The stakes and conditions were in Donald Trump’s favor,” the pollster said. “He should have won the election. But … he didn’t.”

Luntz referred to an article about the United Auto Workers union, or UAW.

“Why is Donald Trump publicly saying he wants to fire the same people he is currently hiring, while continuing to recruit union members?” the polling guru asked.

“It’s ridiculous. It’s like he’s lost control.”
