He has now been earmarked for a leading role in covering the English Premier League in the United States.

NBC portrayed the capture of the 49-year-old as a major coup.

And they also announced a unique title for the former defender.

They proclaimed: “NBC Sports is proud to welcome Gary Neville to the team as a special contributor throughout the 2024/25 season!”

NBC said Nev will be part of their studio coverage every Sunday – but will begin work with Friday’s Premier League opener at Old Trafford between his former club United and Fulham.

And if the fans finish the season as enthusiastic as they were at the start thanks to Nev’s appointment, then we’re in for a fantastic feast of drama!

One fan took the lead in warning skeptics about his arrival with this message: “Oh well I’m going to cut the commentary this season.”

Another joked: “How did you convince the Mayor of Manchester to do this crossing?”

Less subtle blows have also been fired at NBC’s choice.

“Ouch,” said one, while another asserted, “This is the change we didn’t want.”

Other concise verdicts of disapproval included: “Pass”… “Boo”… and “What the hell?”

Another supporter believes two former American stars would be better choices.

He wrote: “I’d take that guy Alexi Lalas over Gary. I’d even take Eric Wynalda. Please man, not Gary.”

But Neville also had his supporters, with one hailing him as a “huge shot to take”.

A second enthusiast posted: “I absolutely love this. This is what we need. More people working for both NBC Sports and Sky Sports.

“We use almost all of their tools, why not bring in some experts as well. Most of us know (Jamie) Carragher from CBS’s coverage of the UEFA Championship League.”

Among the more concise votes for Nev were: “GOOD”… “Yes”… and “NBC needed that!”

Meanwhile, the broadcaster has confirmed its studio team for this weekend – an experienced former BBC presenter Rebecca Lowe and Former Man Utd goalkeeper Tim Howard and other former top-flight aces Robbie Earle and Robbie Mustoe.

NBC described Neville’s role as “in collaboration with Sky Sports”.

And they boasted of breaking records last season.

This included an average audience of nearly 3 million viewers in English and Spanish for “Championship Sunday” – the last day of the campaign.

Changes to be made to the Premier League for the 2024/25 season

NOTHING stays the same forever.

And that includes the Premier League, which is making a number of changes this season.

Team news will now be published 75 MINUTES before kick-off, 15 minutes earlier than had previously been the case.

Things could get crowded on the touchline, with the number of substitutes allowed to warm up increased by three players per team to FIVE.

There is also a change in the way additional time is calculated when a team scores a goal, an update of the ‘multiball’ system and the introduction of semi-automated offside – but not right away.
