Some people like to get to know their neighbors, while others prefer to keep to themselves.

There is nothing wrong with either approach, as it is all a matter of personal preference.

What would you do if you were alone and a group of people asked you to help buy a new television for a neighbor?

In the following story, a man finds himself in exactly this situation.

Let’s see what happened.

I (M26) live in a large apartment complex with several buildings.

I’ve lived here for years now and there’s never been any hint of communal living, which suits me just fine.

Maybe it’s because I moved in during the pandemic, but I don’t even know my neighbors’ names or even what homes people are living in at any given time.

This brings us to Monday night, when I left work.

It seems like a nice gesture.

There were flyers on every door.

Apparently the guy who lived three doors down from me had an incident where his dog jumped up and knocked his TV off the wall, completely breaking it.

He has friends who live in the complex and they have started a collection to help him afford a new one in these “difficult financial times we are all facing as a country”.

The collection includes a few paragraphs describing what a great man he is, how he volunteers at a local charity, how he loves his nieces, etc.

Friends go even further.

Today, while I was preparing my dinner, there was a knock at my door.

Four of his friends prepared a donation box and wanted to know how much I was contributing.

At first I was just confused. I forgot the flyer and had a lot of long days at work.

They seemed offended that I had to ask what the contributions were for and explained the whole television situation to me again.

So I told them I didn’t know him and that “these tough financial times we’re all facing as a country” are a big reason I can’t afford to pay someone else to buy a new TV.

This doesn’t seem to me to be an emergency or a cause that would require people going door to door asking for money.

This is where things go wrong.

One woman called me a bitch and another told me that “it’s people like you (me) who are preventing this place from having any neighborly ties.”

What is this ?

Wow! That’s not very polite!

Let’s see how Reddit readers reacted to this situation.

These are very good thoughts.

These neighbors have some nerve!

The guy should buy his own TV and teach his dog some manners.
