Dogs at weddings: the pros and cons and what to take into account

If you’re planning your big day, or if a wedding is in your future, you may be thinking about dogs at weddings.

In many ways, making your dog part of your wedding can be a good idea. After all, our dogs are an important part of our lives, so why wouldn’t you want them there on such a special day?

However, there are plenty of practical things to think about: according to researchOnly 37% of dog owners include their pups in their wedding, and this is often due to practical and logistical issues.

With the help of veterinarian Dr. Rebecca MacMillan and Chris Bajda Groom’s Daya specialty store for wedding party gifts, let’s take a look at the reasons why you might want to include your dog in your wedding, and what you should consider.

“Involving your dog in your wedding can work well, but not always,” says Dr. MacMillan. “There are many things to consider when making dog-related plans for your big day.”

Meanwhile, Bajda says, “There’s something about dogs that makes everything feel more genuine and relaxed. They bring that touch of spontaneity and joy that turns a formal ceremony into something truly personal and heartfelt.”

Reasons for dogs at weddings

1. They keep you grounded

It’s normal to feel anxious when planning your wedding or when the big day is quickly approaching – and the morning of your wedding can be particularly anxious!

However, having your pup by your side can be a big help. “Dogs aren’t concerned about timeline pressure or whether the flowers are perfect; they just want to be near you,” says Bajda. “I’ve heard from couples that having their dog with them during wedding preparations helped them stay present and reminded them what the day is really about: celebrating love with their closest family members, including four-legged friends.”

2. They create unpredictable moments

It’s completely understandable that you want your wedding to go exactly as planned, but it’s often the unexpected moments that we look back on most fondly.

Maybe your pup picks the perfect time to bark, decides to take a nap in the most surprising place, or you find yourself playing fetch in your wedding clothes. Who knows?

3. They help you break the ice

As fun as it is to have all your favorite people together, wedding receptions can sometimes feel awkward. Where else would your co-worker, your new husband’s great-aunt, and an old school friend all sit a few seats apart?

Well, if there’s a dog running around looking for a fuss, there’s immediately something to talk about.

“I’ve seen entire tables of strangers become fast friends simply because a dog wandered around looking for attention,” says Bajda.

4. They can lighten up formal moments

Weddings can sometimes feel quite stiff and rigid, but having your dog there can make things feel more personal – more of a celebration than a formal ceremony.

“It’s about having your whole family there,” Bajda says. “After all, who better to witness your special day than the person who attended all the little moments leading up to it?”

5. They can bring group photos to life

Throw a dog into the mix and suddenly there are all kinds of new photo opportunities. You may end up with photos of you and your partner walking your dog, photos of them running around, or photos of your pup having the time of his life with your loved ones.

As Bajda says, “Some of the best couple portraits are taken just being themselves with their dog. It’s amazing how a simple game of fetch can create beautiful sunset silhouettes that you would otherwise never get.”

Dogs at weddings: the considerations

1. Your dog’s temperament

“First, think about your dog’s temperament,” says Dr. MacMillan. “A nervous dog wary of strangers will probably be overwhelmed by the wedding guests, music and new surroundings. Likewise, a jumpy, excitable dog may become overstimulated by the festivities. Very old dogs or young puppies can also have difficulty with the event, just like dogs with health problems.”

However, this doesn’t mean you can’t involve your dog at all. If you’d like your pup to be involved, even though he may not enjoy everything, you can take him for a few quiet photos away from the crowd, but don’t make him sit for the entire ceremony.

2. Your expectations

It could be your wedding day, but your dog doesn’t know that, so you can’t expect him to behave well.

It’s best to lower your behavioral expectations beforehand. Of course, it would be great if they were as good as gold, but chances are that won’t be the case. If this causes you stress during the day, it may be best to leave them at home.

3. Someone to take care of your dog

Dr. MacMillan emphasizes the need to find someone who can care for your dog for the day. If you normally rely on friends or family members to care for your dog when you are away, keep in mind that they will likely already be at your wedding and want to spend time with you, so you may need to use a professional dog walking service . or babysitter. Make sure they know what time to pick up your dog and what the times are for the day.

3. The location

If you and your partner are happy, you think your dog will be too, and you’ve found a sitter, all you need to do is check whether your wedding venue allows dogs. If you are in the early stages of wedding planning and have not yet planned a venue, remember that a rural location or an outdoor reception may be more suitable than a small downtown venue.

How to prepare your dog for a wedding

Keep in mind that they still need to go on their usual walks to burn off energy, and they need to go to the toilet regularly, have access to water, and have somewhere to rest if it’s a hot day.

What your dog wears to your wedding is entirely up to you – and your dog, of course! You can opt for something simple, such as a stylish bow tie or bandana in your wedding colours, or for a more formal look with a dog tuxedo. Or even one of the best dog coats could fit well. There is no right or wrong here, as long as your dog is comfortable!

Can dogs walk you down the aisle?

In theory yes! But again, it’s vital to make sure your dog is allowed into the venue to begin with, and that the partygoer is happy your dog is there. Don’t forget to keep your sitter on hand in case your dog becomes unhappy and could use a breather.

Ultimately, when it comes to having your dog at your wedding. There is no right or wrong.

“Think of your dog’s best interests above all, and not your own, when deciding what to do,” says Dr. MacMillan. “If the day isn’t going to be fun for them, it might be best to think about other ways they can perform. You can show photos of your pet or, as I did when I got married, have special statues of you, your partner and your dog made for your wedding cake.”
