What happened in Vienna?
Concert promoter Barracuda Music has announced the cancellation of the three-night Vienna tour, originally scheduled for August 8, due to arrests linked to the terror plot that came too close to the start of the concert. According to reports, authorities revealed that a 19-year-old suspect had planned to target concertgoers outside the Ernst Happel Stadium with knives or homemade explosives, with the aim of “killing as many people as possible.” Austrian officials reported that the suspects were believed to have been inspired by the Islamic State group and al-Qaeda.
The 19-year-old suspect, along with a 17-year-old, was taken into custody on August 6, the day before the cancellation was announced. A third suspect, aged 18, was arrested on August 8. The 19-year-old’s lawyer called the charges an “overreaction,” accusing Austrian authorities of exaggerating the threat to gain new surveillance powers. The cancellations have devastated tens of thousands of Swifties around the world, many of whom had already travelled to Vienna for the concerts.
Despite the Vienna cancellations, the London shows went off without incident, wrapping up on Tuesday and marking the end of the European leg of the record-breaking Eras tour. However, the shows came shortly after a tragic stabbing at a Swift-themed dance class in Southport, UK, that left three young girls dead. Swift has expressed shock and grief over the incident, and reportedly met some of the survivors backstage in London.
Swift’s Eras tour, which became the highest-grossing concert tour in history, is currently on a scheduled hiatus.
