Guillermo del Toro live tweets his feud with a ghost at a haunted hotel in Scotland

The biggest conflict on social media has nothing to do with video games, politics or anything else. It’s actually between Guillermo del Toro and… a ghost?

It may sound silly, but the Oscar-winning director caused a viral moment by live-tweeting his paranormal updates while staying in the “most haunted” room in an old hotel in Aberdeen, Scotland, where he is currently filming a new movie based on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Del Toro initially wrote that he would be staying in the room on Tuesday, after one of his producers apparently left it due to fears of “strange electrical and physical phenomena.”

Del Toro added that he had “high hopes” for some sort of supernatural experience in the room. Based on his subsequent updates, it appears his wish was granted.

In an update last night, del Toro wrote that while nothing supernatural has actually happened so far, the atmosphere in the room is “oppressive” and he should sleep in another room to get enough rest. “I stop there early and late in the day, but there’s something in that room with me,” del Toro wrote. Disturbing!

He promised at least one or two more updates on the situation, especially considering that fans were worried at this point. “Please get out of there! I’m scared for you and I don’t even know you Guillermo,” one fan responded on X/Twitter. “This is stressing me out.”

One fan simply asked, “Are you haunted, bro?”

Fortunately, as promised, del Toro has continued to release updates and continues to release them. while i write this story. One of them arrived about an hour ago, with the director of The Shape of Water writing that he had finished filming for the day and was heading to THE room before dinner.

“Whatever happens, I’ll keep you posted,” he wrote. “The room gives off more than just vibes, there’s something angry and territorial. A hint of rage.”

His latest update came just minutes before this article was published, where he said he was “trying to get an EVP on my iPhone.” For those less informed on paranormal investigation matters, del Toro is likely experimenting with what’s known in the ghost hunting community as an electronic voice phenomenon (EVP), electronic recordings that are supposed to capture the voices of spirits.

Unsurprisingly, the Internet is rather captivated by this whole situation.

“The most captivating movie right now isn’t even in theaters — it’s watching Guillermo Del Toro live-tweet the making of his haunted house,” wrote Mike Isaac, a technology reporter for The New York Times.

Since this is – and I say this without a hint of irony – a developing story, we’ll keep an eye out for updates from del Toro and add them here. Stay safe, GDT.

Del Toro’s long-awaited Frankenstein film has finally begun to come to fruition in recent years, with Euphoria and Saltburn cast Jacob Elordi playing the role of the Monster (replacing Andrew Garfield, who left due to scheduling conflicts). Oscar Isaac also plays Victor Frankenstein alongside Mia Goth and Christoph Waltz.
