‘Breathtaking’: Longhorn Steakhouse customer shocked after ordering adult and child sirloin

After years of runaway inflation, food prices remain high. The USDA noted in June 2024 that “the CPI for food away from home (restaurant purchases)…was 4.1% higher than in June 2023,” and in general, customers expect increasingly higher prices from restaurants.

As a result, many people have been looking for “hacks” to continue eating the restaurant dishes they love without breaking the bank. While some of these hacks involve making copycats of popular items at home, others involve carefully preparing an order to get the most bang for your buck.

One of the most popular tricks is to order a children’s menu. Customers often find that children’s meals always provide a substantial amount of food. Plus, they sell them at a significantly lower price.

For example, one TikTok user sparked a discussion after sharing a kids’ meal hack at Cava, while another revealed a similar trick at Chili’s.

TikTok user Kayleigh (@kayleighleon) previously sparked a debate after revealing that Applebee’s kids’ and adult cheeseburgers looked nearly identical. Now she’s continued the conversation after offering a similar tip for Longhorn Steakhouse.

Sirloin for Kids and Adults at Longhorn Steakhouse

In a video that has been viewed more than 584,000 times, Kayleigh shows off two six-ounce sirloin steaks she says she bought at Longhorn Steakhouse. One was part of an adult meal and the other was part of a kid’s meal.

“It’s a regular six-ounce ribeye,” she said. “It comes with a salad or soup, and I got it with a loaded baked potato. It’s $16.49.”

“And here’s the 6-ounce ribeye for the kids,” she continued. “I got it with a loaded baked potato, and it comes with your choice of beverage, and I chose a Coke. It’s $9.99 — and don’t forget the free bread.”

Although she speculates that the quality or cut of the meat might be different, she concludes upon further investigation that it is the same cut. She also claims that the taste is the same.

“Is the soup or salad worth $7 more to you?” she asks, referring to the price difference between the two meals.

Commentators share their thoughts

In the comments section, users gave their opinions on this kids meal hack. Some noted potential problems when using it.

“They usually require a child to be present. It’s also possible that the restaurant will try to offer parents a deal like before. Like “kids eat half price” etc,” one commenter said.

That said, others in the comments say they’ve found that ordering the item for pickup or delivery gets around this issue. Speaking of which, in an email to the Daily Dot, Kayleigh says she “hasn’t had any issues ordering kids’ meals to go.”

“The only real difference is the seasoning used on the grill haha,” another commenter added. “The kids sirloin gets prairie dust and the adult sirloin gets grill seasoning plus an extra side of your choice.”

“I was a manager at Longhorn. It’s the exact same steak!” a third replied. “If you only want one side dish, the kids menu is the way to go!”

“I would definitely recommend this tip, especially if you’re trying to save money,” Kayleigh told the Daily Dot via email.
