Deadlock’s Existence Finally Acknowledged By Valve With Store Page And Official Announcement

Valve is finally ready to unveil Deadlock, its not-so-secret multiplayer game that thousands of people have been playing for weeks.

Throughout August, Deadlock has been steadily gaining traction and popularity through an invite system, with existing testers able to invite their friends. As a result, the game has quietly amassed thousands of players, reaching over 18,000 concurrent players by mid-August and peaking at over 44,000 players earlier this week.

However, while the game is accessible to anyone who knows someone else who plays it, a splash screen at the start of the game asked players to “not share anything about the game with anyone.” Many players understandably ignored this relatively mild and non-legally binding warning, leading to a number of gameplay videos on YouTube and at least one article in The Verge.

As a result, we’ve known for weeks that Deadlock is a 6v6 third-person shooter with a MOBA twist, in that it takes place across four lanes with waves of aggressively respawning soldiers. It’s still in “early development,” Valve warns, “with lots of temporary art and experimental gameplay.” However, Valve has now officially lifted its request not to share information about the game and revealed its official store page.

Deadlock is still invite-only at the moment, but now that the game is finally out, it seems likely that Valve will start actively discussing what Deadlock is, alongside critics and content creators, as well as a potential surge in new players. Maybe one of them will be able to explain what’s going on with the goofy dragon-character wearing a newsboy cap we’ve been seeing everywhere.
