States with the highest energy costs for household appliances

  • Hawaii has the highest annual appliance costs in the state, with a staggering $704.56 for appliances such as a washing machine, refrigerator and dishwasher.
  • California is second, with a total annual cost of $534.15 for typical household appliances, while Connecticut is third at $461.18.
  • Utah has the lowest cost of appliances at just $172.59 per year, 76% less than Hawaii residents.

A new study reveals which states have the highest annual energy costs for appliances, with Hawaii topping the list.

Home warranty experts Cinch Home Services analyzed Energy Star data to determine the average annual energy consumption in kilowatt hours (kWh) of common household appliances. This data was compared to the average electricity costs in each state, according to the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA).

The total operating cost of five common household appliances was then calculated for each U.S. state. These appliances included a washing machine, a dryer, a bottom-freezer refrigerator, a dishwasher and an electric range.

The 10 States With the Highest Appliance Costs

The study found that Hawaii has the highest annual appliance costs, at a staggering $704.56. With Hawaii’s average electricity price per kWh at 45.19 cents, that means the average annual energy cost for a standard clothes dryer is $288.88, a refrigerator with a freezer is $176.47, and a standard dishwasher is $106.20.

California ranks second, with an average total annual cost of $534.15 for appliances, with an average electricity price per kWh of 34.26 cents. The average annual energy cost for a clothes dryer is $219.01 in California, as well as $65.09 for an electric range and $35.75 for a clothes dryer.

Connecticut ranks third, with an average electricity price per kWh of 29.58 cents and a total annual cost of $461.18 for all five appliances. Connecticut residents face an average annual cost of $115.51 to run a refrigerator, $30.87 for a washing machine and $189.09 for a dryer.

Massachusetts ranks fourth on the list, with a total annual energy cost of $459.93 for standard appliances, with an average cost per kWh of 29.50 cents. On average, an electric range costs $56.05 per year in energy in Massachusetts, as do $115.20 for a refrigerator and $188.58 for a clothes dryer.

Rhode Island comes in fifth, with an average electricity price per kWh of 27.93 cents and a total energy cost for appliances of $435.46 per year. A clothes dryer costs Rhode Islanders an average of $178.54 per year, a dishwasher costs $65.64, and a washing machine costs $29.14.

Alaska ranks sixth, with a total energy cost of $388.06 for appliances, as the average price per kWh of electricity is 24.89 cents. Alaskans face average annual prices of $159.11 for a clothes dryer, $97.20 for a refrigerator, and $47.29 for an electric range.

New Hampshire ranks seventh, with an average electricity price per kWh of 23 cents and a total energy cost for all five appliances of $358.59 per year. In New Hampshire, the annual energy cost for a washing machine is $24, for a dryer it is $147.03, and for a dishwasher it is $54.05.

In eighth place is New York, where the annual energy cost for household appliances is $358.13. The average electricity price per kWh is 22.97 cents, just 46 cents less than in New Hampshire. A clothes dryer costs an average of $146.84 per year, a refrigerator costs $89.70, and a dishwasher costs $53.98.

Vermont ranks ninth, with an average energy cost of 21.85 cents per kWh and a total annual energy cost of $340.66 for five appliances. For Vermonters, an electric range costs an average of $41.52 in energy per year, $22.80 for a washing machine, and $139.68 for a dryer.

Maine is one of the top ten states for appliance energy costs. In the state, the average annual cost of a washer, dryer, refrigerator, dishwasher, and electric range is $319.15. On average, electricity costs Mainers 20.47 cents per kWh, which means that running a washing machine each year costs $21.36, a dishwasher costs $48.10, and a refrigerator costs $79.94.

A spokesperson for Cinch Home Services commented on the findings:

“Uncovering the energy costs associated with running standard household appliances provides valuable insight into household spending, perhaps inspiring you to manage your consumption to save on your bills.

“It’s also interesting to break down electricity prices between states, which, unsurprisingly, puts Hawaii at the top since resources can travel long distances to reach that state. Similarly, energy prices between Connecticut and Massachusetts are extremely close due to their proximity.

“In all 50 states, the clothes dryer is the most expensive appliance to operate, costing American households an average of $107.91 per year, and the least expensive is the washing machine, at just $17.61.”
