Man under arrest warrant arrives at police station in stolen vehicle, injures officer before arrest

The Inver Grover Heights Police Department is sharing details about a recent incident they say is hard to believe.

The department said it all started Sunday when officers arrested two people found slumped in a car. The driver was arrested for driving under the influence, while the passenger was arrested on outstanding warrants.

Later, the driver was due to be released for a sober evening and called a friend to pick her up from the station.

This is where it becomes hard to believe, according to the police department.

Police say the friend who picked up the driver had three arrest warrants in multiple counties, arrived in a stolen vehicle and had incorrect license plates.

Police said the man was aware of his arrest warrant and decided to turn himself in anyway.

After learning of the arrest warrants, the police went to take the man into custody. However, when an officer went to open the door of the vehicle to arrest him, the driver sped off. The officer was slightly injured and other officers began chasing the vehicle.

The pursuit eventually ended on Highway 52 when a South St. Paul police officer performed a PIT maneuver to stop the vehicle.

Three people were in the vehicle, which was allegedly stolen; the man wanted on an arrest warrant was arrested, while the two other occupants were found not to be involved in the incident and were later released.

The driver was taken into custody in Dakota County on multiple new charges, including assault on a peace officer and fleeing in a motor vehicle.
