Representative Miller-Meeks announces candidacy for Secretary of the House Republican Conference pending District 1 race results

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks announced her candidacy Tuesday for secretary of the House Republican Conference.

It comes as we still wait for an official winner in Iowa’s first district congressional race.

Miller-Meeks leads Democratic challenger Christina Bohannan by fewer than 800 votes.

However, we are still waiting for votes from military members and U.S. citizens living abroad.

Miller-Meeks declared victory last Tuesday, but Bohannan says the race is still too close to call.

The official canvas will follow on Wednesday.

In her announcement Tuesday, Miller-Meeks expressed confidence in her re-election.

“We currently have a lead of more than 800 votes over our opponent and it is mathematically impossible to catch up with the remaining provisional ballots yet to be counted. I have no doubt that my election will be confirmed and that I will prevail… by more than six votes,” Miller-Meeks said. referring to her victory in the 2020 elections by a margin of six votes over Democrat Rita Hart.

In announcing her candidacy for secretary of the House Republican Conference, Miller-Meeks expressed the need for someone from a battleground district in the leadership of the House Republican Conference.
