Kate Middleton’s video message includes tribute to Queen Elizabeth

Kate Middleton pays tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth in her own way.

The Princess of Wales, 42, appeared to include a subtle nod to the late monarch in her latest video message, in which she revealed she had completed chemotherapy treatment after being diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.

In the moving video, Kate can be seen driving a Land Rover in strikingly similar footage to the Queen doing the same in the 1992 documentary. Elizabeth R: A Year in the Life of the Queen.

The camera showed an over-the-shoulder shot of the Princess of Wales driving the car near her country home, Anmer Hall, in Norfolk, past trees and grass in an open space outdoors. Similarly, the late Queen was seen in her documentary driving through a wooded area on the nearby Sandringham Estate.

The timing of the video’s posting is also notable, as it was shared on Monday, September 9, just one day after the second anniversary of the Queen’s death on September 8.

The parallels aren’t surprising, as a source familiar with the matter previously said the late queen was one of the Princess of Wales’ role models within the royal family. The queen’s biographer, Sally Bedell Smith, previously told PEOPLE in 2022 that Kate “learned a lot” from the monarch “by watching her.”

“She knows what resonates. She will have learned a lot from this queen,” Bedell Smith tells PEOPLE, adding that Kate also embodies the queen’s unofficial motto for public life: “Never complain, never explain.”

But that’s not the only inspiration Kate seems to have taken from the late Queen. The Princess of Wales also seems to have been inspired by the monarch’s style, who wears bright colours to official events (making it easy for her fans to spot her!) and has worn jewellery on loan from Queen Elizabeth herself.

The queen had “this particular style, almost like a uniform, which also suits Kate,” a friend tells PEOPLE.

Kate and Prince William, 42, both had a special relationship with the late monarch. After the Queen’s husband Prince Philip died in April 2021, the couple decided to move from London to Windsor so the future king could be closer to his grandmother, who had been a resident of Windsor Castle before her death, author Robert Jobson wrote in his biography. Catherine, Princess of Wales.

“Catherine understood that for William, as the future king, it was important that he be geographically closer to the late Queen in her final months, when he had to support her and her father. This made a real difference,” he wrote. “They were in regular contact, seeing each other in person and speaking on the phone several times a week, which brought them even closer.”

Another major reason for the move was “schooling,” a family friend told PEOPLE at the time. Majesty Joe Little of the American magazine noted that this was something Queen Elizabeth would have liked, saying: “She expects them to continue to show composure and to do it with grace.”
