Chappell Roan Says She Can’t Stand Her Wild On-Stage Looks In Real Life

Sometimes Chappell Roan just wants to keep her outfits casual.

The “Pink Pony Club” singer, real name Kayleigh Amstutz, has made a name for herself in the fashion world with her fashion-forward looks. But she wants you to know that her glamour doesn’t last long once she leaves the stage.

In an interview with Rolling stone Posted on Tuesday, September 10, the 26-year-old pop star admitted that on a normal day, she prefers to wear low-key looks.

“I wear gray and black in real life because I can’t stand the shit I wear (on stage),” she said.

This year, Roan has worn everything from a wrestling-inspired look at Lollapalooza to a Statue of Liberty ensemble for her performance at Governors Ball in New York City. When she performed in Chicago ahead of the city’s festival in August, she also opted for a Marie Antoinette costume complete with a towering wig.

Although she doesn’t wear these extravagant looks in her free time, she enjoys them a lot.

“My stylist Genesis Webb and I get inspiration from drag, horror, burlesque, theater,” she told Jimmy Fallon on his late-night talk show in June. “I like to be pretty and scary. Or pretty and cheesy. Or just not pretty. I like that too.”

The pop star also explained that when it comes to fashion, she throws all the rules out the window.

“I think it’s not serious,” she said. “I love that fans find such deep meaning in things and I’m just like, ‘I don’t know, I thought I was sexy.’ I don’t know if it’s more than that.”

Webb and Roan’s admiration for each other’s work is mutual. “She’s very playful. She wants to do everything,” Webb praised in a July 9 interview with Harper’s Bazaar.
