Detroit Zoo Announces Name of Baby Gorilla

DETROIT, Mich. (WNEM) – A name has been chosen for the baby gorilla born in early August at the Detroit Zoo.

In late August, the zoo offered the public the opportunity to help name it by donating at least $10 to help SAFE Gorilla vote.

On Tuesday, September 10, the zoo announced that the winner was Motema, pronounced MO-TEM-A. Her name means “heart” in Lingala.

The other names were Usala, Amateka, Mbere and Lobéké.

“Thank you to everyone who voted, your donations help support gorilla conservation efforts around the world,” the zoo said.
