Trump refuses to say whether he would veto national abortion ban

Despite repeated pressure on the issue, former President Donald Trump declined Wednesday to say whether he would sign a nationwide abortion ban if elected to a second term.

Moderators of the ABC News presidential debate, the only scheduled debate between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, asked the Republican nominee to clarify one’s position on reproductive rights.

After quickly denouncing student loan forgiveness instead of answering the question of whether he would veto a national abortion ban, moderator Linsey Davis asked the question again.

“But if I could just get a yes or no, because your running mate, J.D. Vance, said you would veto it if it came to your desk,” she said.

“Well, I haven’t talked to JD about it, in all honesty,” Trump responded.

“We don’t need to discuss it because she could never get it,” he added, without specifying exactly what “she could never get it” was referring to, before turning once again to a confusing reference to the Biden administration’s attempts to cancel student loan debt.

During the debate, Trump also repeated his common — but completely false — claim that Democrats’ abortion policy includes support for executing babies.

The heated exchange comes at a time when many are eagerly awaiting Trump to clarify his position on reproductive rights. bragged about overturning Roe v. WadeHe appeared to suggest last month that he would support Florida’s pro-choice amendment — though shortly afterward he said he would vote against it.
