Trojans beat Eden/North Collins 48-28 in C South | News, Sports, Jobs

EDEN — Southwestern rushed for 274 yards and six touchdowns en route to a 48-28 Class C South football victory over Eden/North Collins on Friday night.

Bradyn Fuller rushed eight times for 137 yards and two touchdowns, while Brody Larson rushed seven times for 108 yards and three touchdowns for the Trojans (2-0, 1-0), who led 34-0 before Eden/North Collins (1-1, 0-1) scored.

Larson, Fuller and Owen Hayes scored on touchdown runs of 16, 11 and 15 yards, respectively, as Southwestern led 21-0 after the first quarter.

Fuller added a 40-yard touchdown run and Larson scored from 35 yards out as the Trojans’ lead ballooned to 34-0 in the second quarter.

In the second half, Joey Sirianni caught a 13-yard touchdown from Hayes and Larson scored on a 15-yard run.

“We just took what the game gave us,” Southwestern coach Jake Burkholder said. “There’s going to be games where we have to put the ball in the air. We were able to put the ball on the ground and we were able to do that. We had some good results.”

On defense, George Marshall made nine tackles; Fuller made five tackles, including one for loss; Brayden Potter made three tackles, including two for loss, and intercepted a pass; and Oscar Harris, Trent Casselman and Larson each made five tackles.

Southwestern hosts Salamanca next Friday.

“Chad (Bartoszek) is a great coach and he does a great job with these kids,” Burkholder said. “We’ve had great interactions with them over the last three years. I wouldn’t expect anything less this week.”

SALAMANCA

HOLD THE PANTHERS

SALAMANCA — Maddox Isaac ran for a 74-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter and Salamanca dominated Portville/Cuba-Rushford in the red zone late in the game for a 24-19 win in Class C South.

The Warriors (2-0, 2-0) opened the scoring with Xavier Peters’ 96-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter.

“It was kind of a scripted play and we stuck to it. We looked to see where they were lined up,” Salamanca head coach Chad Bartoszek said. “They probably missed an opening, we blocked it well, and once it got over the second level, there was nobody home. It was a footrace and you’re just not going to catch it.”

Portville/Cuba-Rushford drove for Adam Roe’s 5-yard touchdown run, but Salamanca responded immediately when Jesse Hill returned the ensuing kickoff 78 yards for a 12-6 lead.

“As a coach, I loved it. It was definitely a boost,” Bartoszek said. “He hit a seam and left, but it got our defense back on the field. … Portville had the ball for a long time tonight.”

Just before halftime, Eli Sleggs hit Mehki Muhyee for a 45-yard touchdown to make it 12-12 at the break.

“They scored right before halftime. That kind of took the wind out of our sails,” Bartoszek said. “We had a tough second quarter with some bad stuff on defense and we didn’t really have the ball on offense.”

Isaac gave the Warriors an 18-12 lead with a 33-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, but Portville/Cuba-Rushford (1-1, 1-1) took its first lead of the game with 11:27 left in the fourth quarter on Max DeYoe’s 3-yard touchdown run and Conner Roulo’s kick.

Just 32 seconds later, Salamanca was back in control thanks to Isaac’s long touchdown run.

After stopping the Panthers in the red zone, Salamanca earned a first down, but was ultimately forced to punt on fourth and long. But Portville/Cuba-Rushford never got the ball back as a roughing the kicker penalty allowed the Warriors to run down the clock.

Isaac and Peters combined for 269 of Salamanca’s 276 rushing yards. Zach Trietley had 14 tackles, while Cory Holleran had 13 tackles and intercepted two passes for the Warriors. Payton Bradley also had an interception.

Unofficially, Portville/Cuba-Rushford held a 35:44-12:16 advantage in time of possession.
