Harris says she’s relieved Trump is safe after shooting

Vice President Harris expressed relief Sunday that former President Trump is safe after what the FBI said was another assassination attempt on his life in Florida.

“I have been made aware of reports of gunshots fired near former President Trump and his Florida property, and I am pleased he is safe. Violence has no place in America,” Harris wrote on the social media platform X on Sunday afternoon.

The Secret Service fired shots after a man armed with an AK-style rifle allegedly pushed the barrel of the gun through the front steps of the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, the Associated Press reported, citing three law enforcement officials.

The man then dropped his gun and fled in an SUV, the AP said. He was later apprehended in a neighboring county.

The Democratic presidential nominee’s remarks came shortly after Trump’s campaign confirmed the former president was safe after gunshots were reported near him in Florida.

Trump was the victim of an assassination attempt in July. The former president was shot in the ear and another man attending his rally was killed in the shooting.

“President Trump is safe after gunfire nearby. No further details at this time,” Trump’s communications director Steven Cheung said in a statement.

The incident occurred near the Trump International Golf Course in Palm Beach County, Florida, where Trump was playing golf on Sunday.

The Trump campaign did not provide further information, although the White House later confirmed the incident.

Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told X that the agency was working with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to investigate a “protective incident” involving Trump shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday. He confirmed that Trump was safe. A briefing is scheduled for later Sunday afternoon.

The Hill has reached out to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, the West Palm Police Department, the Secret Service and the Trump Organization for further comment.

President Biden has also been briefed on the matter, the White House said in a pool report.

Harris and Biden were “relieved to know he is safe and well. They will be regularly briefed by their team,” the White House said.

Trump’s campaign addressed the shooting in a fundraising email sent later Sunday, writing: “TRUMP ALERT. There have been shots fired in my neighborhood, but before the rumors start to get out of hand, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND HEALTHY!”

“Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER give up. I will always love you for your support. Unity. Peace. Let’s make America great again. God bless you,” the email said.

The previous assassination attempt raised concerns about the intelligence services’ lack of preparation to protect the former president.

The fallout from the Secret Service’s preparation for and response to the shooting prompted Director Kimberly Cheatle to resign in July after a disastrous appearance before Congress to review the incident.
