Will actor Simon Bird breaks silence on cast reunion for third film after co-star reveals ‘talks’

INBETWEENERS star Simon Bird has broken his silence on his plans for a third film.

It comes after his co-star Joe Thomas said all the main cast would be keen to reunite a decade after the last film.

But now Simon, 40, who played Will Mackenzie in the teen comedy, has confirmed there are no plans for a reunion in the near future.

He also said he was “putting a damper on” fan speculation that another film was in the works.

“I’m afraid I’m going to be the one to throw cold water on this, but that’s not going to happen,” he told the Mail.

“I can tell you emphatically that there is no prospect of a reunion.”

However, the star didn’t rule it out and said he and the cast would be keen on a reunion, but that it was up to the writers.

Simon added: “We’d be happy to do it, but it’s not up to us, it’s up to the writers, Iain and Damon, and I know they’re both very busy these days.

“I’m afraid it’s no more likely to happen today than it was ten years ago.”

The star also admitted people shout famous Inbetweeners quotes at him in the street – but said he doesn’t remember the show and hasn’t watched it since it premiered in 2008.

He admitted he was surprised that people still liked the show, adding that there was still an “appetite” for it.

Simon added that he was still very close to his co-stars, including Blake Harrison, James Buckley and Joe, and that they had a WhatsApp group where they plan to meet regularly.

The announcement comes after The Sun revealed earlier this year that talks over a relaunch were already underway.

Joe, who played Simon Cooper in the series, said another film was more likely than a new TV series, and that the boys would be a long way from school – where the characters were when the Channel 4 sitcom began in 2008.

Asked if the conversions for a return have started, Joe said: “Yes, it has happened in various forms. We all think it would be good to do it.”

He revealed he is still good friends with the cast, including James Buckley (rude Jay), Simon Bird (posh Will) and Blake Harrison (sleepy Neil).

He discussed “some of the ideas that are floating around” for a revival, including a Vegas bachelor party.

The four boys also met up to play five-a-side football instead of in the school common room.

But Joe admits: “Everyone wonders if it will be as good. That’s what we’re going to do.”

The comedy, which also starred Emily Atack as Charlotte, ran for three seasons between 2008 and 2010 and gained a loyal following.

But it was the two films from 2011 and 2014 that gave The Inbetweeners great popularity.

The Inbetweeners 2, which saw the childhood quartet travel to Australia, broke the first film’s box office record by grossing £2.75 million on its first day of release.

Simon Bird has previously said that people still shout “water in a briefcase” at him in the street, in honour of Will’s nickname.

However, Joe admits that the four main stars eventually accepted his success after appearing in a series of other projects.

He told the Always Be Comedy podcast: “We’re all still here, we’re all still in each other’s lives.

“We still all love each other. And if such an idea came up, I think we would want to do it.

“I feel like we all still like each other a lot.

“We were all able to step away and get rid of some issues, in terms of things we felt we needed to do other than The Inbetweeners to prove something to ourselves.”
