Danny Boyle’s ’28 Years Later’ Shot on iPhone 15 — World of Reel

Danny Boyle’s ’28 Years Later’ Shot on iPhone 15 — World of Reel

This is certainly an intriguing update on Danny Boyle’s “28 Years Later.”

It turns out the movie was shot with an iPhone 15. “28 Years” cost $75 million to shoot, making it the most expensive film ever shot on a smartphone. Boyle was aided by his favorite cinematographer, Anthony Dod Mantle (“Slumdog Millionaire,” “28 Days Later,” “Trainspotting,” “127 Hours”).

Principal photography on “28 Years Later” wrapped in August, and apparently the cast and crew had to sign confidentiality agreements to not reveal that the film was shot on smartphones. However, the use of an iPhone 15 on Boyle’s upcoming sequel was confirmed today. CABLE by several people connected to the film.

“28 Days Later” was shot digitally in 2002, one of the first Hollywood films to be shot on a Canon XL-1. Since then, digital has become the standard for many filmmakers.

There have only been a handful of notable films to be shot on an iPhone, including Sean Baker’s Tangerine (2015) and Steven Soderbergh’s Unsane (2018), but those independent films had a fraction of the budget Boyle used for “28 Years.”

“28 Years Later” is set to star Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes and Charlie Hunman. Cillian Murphy, who starred in the first film, is said to have a small role in the film. Plot details are being kept under wraps. Nia DaCosta is currently filming the sequel, titled “28 Years Later: Temple of Bones.”

Earlier this year, after a fierce battle, Sony won the deal and acquired the rights to Boyle’s “28 Years Later” trilogy, which will be written by Alex Garland. The project was very interesting and several studios were in the running for the rights, including Warner Bros. Sony is producing and distributing it.

Boyle’s last film was 2019’s “Yesterday,” a sweet but very light Beatles-themed romantic comedy that seemed like an anomaly in Boyle’s usually dark filmography.
