Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña reveal who inspired their Emilia Pérez performances

Selena Gomez (Jessi) and Zoe Saldaña (Rita) also talk about taking their careers into their own hands, their favorite scents and more.

Fresh off the awards buzz for Emilia Perezwe spoke with Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña to explain the film, their favorite scenes together, and everything in between.

If you’ve seen it Emilia Perez you’ll already know why it sparks so much conversation. The musical extravaganza is both hilarious and moving, all tied together by career-defining performances from Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña.

The film follows Rita (Saldaña), a lawyer who is hired by drug cartel leader Emilia Pérez (Gascón) to fake her death and transition to becoming her true self. Emilia leaves her wife Jessi (Gomez) completely in the dark.

Speaking to Capital Buzz ahead of the London premiere of Emilia PerezSelena and Zoe had a lot to say about the movie.

Selena recalled her favorite scene of Zoe in the movie, mentioning Zoe’s performance of the moving song “El Mal.” She said: “Oh definitely Zoe’s performance in the red suit. Just her anger and her precision. What she said, everything hits you in the best way.”

As for Zoe’s favorite Selena scene in the film, she added: “My favorite moment is when you sing ‘Bienvenida.’ It’s so amazing to see you capture the frustration a woman or person can feel when they can’t be who they are. they really are.”

She added, “That explosion you have in that bedroom, that’s my favorite thing.”

Elsewhere, Zoe revealed that artists such as Fatboy Slim, Annie Lennox and Phil Collins inspired her musical numbers. That said, Selena said she only focused on what felt for her character Jessi.
