Woman seriously injured after running red light

A security cordon was put in place while emergency services responded to the scene.

A woman has been seriously injured after a car ploughed into a traffic light. Emergency services were called to Menlove Avenue in Woolton at 12.38pm on Saturday, September 20.

The incident was reported following a report that a green Peugeot had collided with a traffic light on Menlove Avenue, at the junction with Beaconsfield Road. Officers attended the scene and after investigation believe there was an accident involving the Peugeot and a black Ford Zetec, which then led to the collision with the traffic lights.

An octogenarian woman who was in the Peugeot was taken to hospital and her condition is considered serious, police said. The drivers of both cars stopped at the scene.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said one person, believed to be one of the drivers, was trapped inside the car for “medical reasons” and firefighters had to remove the roof to free them.

Sergeant Matt Bernard, from the Road Policing Unit, said: “We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward. We are also appealing for anyone who has CCTV or doorbell footage that captured the incident to come forward. We are particularly keen to speak to any motorists who were in the area who may have dashcam footage of the incident.”
