A Trinamool Congress councillor from Barasat district has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a businessman from Tripura. He was arrested in connection with the case and later suspended from the party over the allegations.

Milan Sardar, a Trinamool municipal councillor from Ward 2, was arrested from his home on Thursday night by CID officers. Initial investigations suggested that he had planned to kidnap a Tripura-based businessman for a ransom of Rs 2.25 crore.

A multi-storey gated community was raided by CID officials in Madhyamgram area of North 24 Parganas and the businessman was rescued.

On Friday, September 20, Mr. Sardar was produced in the Barasat court and asked for 14 days of police custody. According to reports, Mr. Sardar assured the kidnappers that as a Trinamool municipal councilor, he would be able to protect everyone from any police action.

The businessman was abducted on September 1 from the Khardah police station area, from the parking lot of a residential complex. Five people were allegedly involved in the abduction and he was held hostage in another well-known residential complex in Madhyamgram area near Barasat.

According to reports, the kidnapped businessman was beaten up and several of his acquaintances were called to demand a huge ransom. The CID officers reportedly had inside information about the victim’s whereabouts, which led them to the location in question.

The crime branch has arrested seven people in the kidnapping case, including Milan Sardar and a former constable of the New Town police station. The former constable was reportedly dismissed from his post in 2013 due to irregularities.

The same businessman had been kidnapped twice earlier in 2022 and 2023. In the last two rounds of kidnappings, the kidnappers had apparently taken a huge ransom of Rs 9.25 crore.
