Florida Deputy Arrested After ‘Accidentally’ Shooting Girlfriend in the Head

A Florida sheriff’s deputy allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend while showing her how to clean a gun, according to reports.

Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy Leslie Boileau, who had been drinking, was showing his girlfriend, Polina Wright, 25, how to clean an AR-style rifle Thursday when the weapon discharged a loaded round into his forehead, according to the Ocala Police Department.

The sheriff, who was carrying a gun, told police that his late girlfriend asked him how to clean a gun just before showing him how to disassemble and clean the rifle and a 9-millimeter handgun, Fox13 reported.

The two men then pointed their guns at each other.

The couple had just returned from a dinner where they each had three margaritas when Boileau spotted the gun cleaning products he had recently ordered, the outlet reported. That’s when his girlfriend inquired about his gun cleaning ritual.

Boileau said he grabbed the rifle and fired it once, according to the arrest report.

“During the second dry-fire attempt, Boileau forgot that he had placed the loaded magazine in the rifle which fired a live round in the direction of (his girlfriend), ultimately killing her,” the arrest report states.

Boileau then called 911 to report that he had “accidentally shot his girlfriend” at their home, police said.

Ocala police found Polina dead from a gunshot wound to the head, the handgun in her lap and the rifle nearby.

Boileau, a deputy for eight years, was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter, police said, adding that a search of his home found physical evidence corroborating his version of the incident.

He was immediately fired after the shooting, the sheriff’s office told WESH, confirming that the gun used in the fatal incident was not his service weapon.

Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said in a statement that the Ocala Police Department has the support of his office, Fox reported.

“Tens of thousands of law enforcement officers do their jobs remarkably every day,” Woods said. “But sadly, the tragic actions of just one are felt throughout the law enforcement community.”

Boileau is being held without bail at the Marion County Jail.
