Consumer forum asks Delhi University to pay Rs 24,000 for delaying student’s refund

HYDERABAD: The Nalgonda District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has ordered Delhi University to pay Rs 23,745, including Rs 5,000 as compensation, for not refunding the admission fee of a 19-year-old complainant, Kompally Shreyan.

In 2022, Shreyan enrolled in a program costing Rs 18,745, but later decided to drop out for personal reasons, paying a cancellation fee of Rs 1,000. When he applied for a refund of the registration fee, the university acknowledged his request. It said it had asked the dean of admissions to look into the matter, but did not respond for several months.

The Commission noted that it is the responsibility of the university to make timely refunds. Finding deficiency in service on the part of Delhi University, the court ordered a refund of Rs 18,745 with 9% interest from the date of cancellation (November 5, 2022) till payment, along with compensation.
