Heavy Fog Advisory Issued for Portions of Pennsylvania Through Sunday Morning

As of 2:35 a.m. Sunday, the National Weather Service issued a dense fog advisory in effect until 10 a.m. for northern Clinton and north central as well as Warren, McKean, Potter, Elk, Cameron, Clearfield, Cambria, Blair, Somerset and Bedford counties.

The weather service says: “Visibility one-quarter mile or less in dense fog.”

“Driving conditions are hazardous due to reduced visibility,” the weather service said. “Consider allowing extra time to reach your destination. If you are driving, slow down, use your low beams, and leave plenty of distance ahead.”

Weather Service Tips for Navigating in Foggy Conditions

When a Dense Fog Advisory is issued for your area, it means that widespread, dense fog has formed and visibility may drop to a quarter mile or less. These conditions pose travel challenges, so use extra caution on the road or consider postponing your trip if possible.

If you must drive in foggy conditions, keep the following safety tips in mind:

Reduce speed:

Slow down and allow extra travel time to reach your destination safely.

Priority to visibility:

Make sure your vehicle is visible to others by using low beam headlights, which also activate your taillights. If you have fog lights, use them.

Avoid high beams:

Avoid using high beams as they create glare that impairs your visibility on the road.

Keep a safe distance:

Maintain a safe distance to account for sudden stops or changes in traffic patterns.

Stay in your lane:

Use the road markings as a guide to stay on the right lane.

Visibility close to zero:

In extremely dense fog where visibility is close to zero, the best course of action is to first turn on your hazard lights, then pull over to a safe location, such as a local business parking lot, and stop.

No parking possibilities:

If you don’t have a parking space, pull your vehicle as far to the side of the road as possible. Once stopped, turn off all lights except the hazard lights, apply the emergency brake and release the brake pedal to ensure your tail lights are not on, reducing the risk of collision with other drivers.

By following these weather service recommendations, you can navigate foggy conditions more safely, reducing the risk of accidents and prioritizing your well-being.
