The future looks bright for Michigan State and coach Jonathan Smith

The Michigan State Spartans suffered their first road loss against Boston College on Saturday.

Michigan State was without receivers Nick Marsh and Jaron Glover. Marsh was injured in the Spartans’ win over Prairie View A&M, and Glover has been out since the season opener.

That meant coach Jonathan Smith and his coaching staff were going to face Boston College without four of their top receivers and several offensive linemen. Still, Michigan State played a talented Boston College team down the stretch and didn’t even have some of the team’s best players on the field.

The Spartans played admirably overall. They entered the fourth quarter tied with Boston College, which nearly beat one of the top-ranked teams last weekend. It was a very close game throughout, but Michigan State was unable to stop Boston College from getting into the end zone late in the game.

Michigan State’s loss to Boston College is disappointing because the Spartans had several chances to win but didn’t. They had the opportunity to start the season 4-0 before focusing on Ohio State, the next team Michigan State will face. The Spartans follow up their game against one of the best teams in the country with another top team in Oregon, not to mention Michigan State’s arch-rival Michigan, in the weeks to come.

While the Michigan State loss was a bit frustrating for the players in the locker room, Smith is tasked with rebuilding the Michigan State football program. The fact that Smith and Michigan State were able to compete with what was once a top-25 team in the country is proof that Smith has his team on the right track.

Smith certainly seemed to have the respect of the locker room and was just a few unlucky plays away from leaving Boston College with a victory. Smith won three of his first four games and had his team competing in every game. The game at Boston College may not have ended the way everyone wanted, but it showed that Michigan State is not as far away as people think.
