Strictly’s Montell Douglas rushed to hospital with health concerns | Celebrity News | Showbiz & TV

Olympian and Strictly Come Dancing contestant Montell Douglas has shared the harrowing experience of being rushed to hospital after going into convulsions in pain, calling it a “wake-up call”.

Despite her athletic prowess as a Team GB Olympian, former British 100m record holder and Gladiators’ Fire, Montell Douglas faces an uphill battle off the dance floor.

The 38-year-old star has opened up about her period pain that has had a huge impact on her life, with the painful health issue once sending her to the hospital for emergency treatment.

Montell suffers from excruciating menstrual pain that can interrupt her activities and disrupt her routine. She has been prescribed powerful painkillers that must be taken preventatively to be effective.

Unfortunately, neglecting this precaution led to a serious incident which required urgent medical attention, the Mirror reports.

Earlier this year, on Good Morning Britain, Montell shared his harrowing experience: “Being in hospital was a wake-up call for me. My body started convulsing and I was almost passing out because the pain was so intense.

“I was too hot because of the hormones: my body couldn’t control its temperature, which made me dehydrated. The pain came in waves, like contractions.”

After calling an ambulance herself and being admitted to hospital and put on a drip, the Gladiators star has teamed up with Bupa to raise awareness of dysmenorrhoea, urging other women to seek help for their painful, heavy or irregular periods.

She spoke candidly: “I’m going to be very honest about this because I think it’s something we really need to talk about more, the excruciating pain…not many people and not all women will feel the same way,” emphasizing the emotional and physical toll of the disease.

She detailed the personal toll her condition has taken on her training and competitive experiences: “It can be really discouraging. There have been times in my athletic career where I’ve been doubled over in pain, lying doubled over in bed in pain, or if I’ve gotten to the track to train, I’ve just been lying on the floor. The waves are so intense that not only do you focus on what you’re trying to do, which is always at a high level, but it’s very distracting.”

“A lot of times I can’t actually do the task I’m supposed to do, so I can’t duel, I can’t run, the pain of doing my sport is bad enough without having to think about it and question it.”

After her hospitalization, Montell underwent a contraceptive implant procedure, which she says significantly relieved her menstrual pain.

Montell made his Strictly debut on Saturday night with partner Johannes Radebe. They performed a Foxtrot to Dinah Washington’s Is You Is or Is You Ain’t My Baby? and were hailed by the judges, with Shirley calling them a “match made in heaven”.

Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday at 6.15pm.
