D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai Joins ‘Caught Stealing’ Movie With Austin Butler

Emmy Award nominee D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Dog reservation) has joined the cast of Darren Aronofsky’s crime thriller Caught red-handed stealing from Sony Pictures, Deadline confirmed.

Caught red-handed stealing Hank Thompson (Austin Butler), a washed-up former baseball player, finds himself unwittingly thrust into a fierce struggle for survival in the criminal underworld of 1990s inner-city New York. Woon-A-Tai will play Dale, Hank’s best friend since high school.

In March, Deadline exclusively revealed that the project, based on Charlie Huston’s books, was in the works, with Butler in the lead role and Aronofsky directing. Huston wrote the screenplay and Aronofsky’s company Protozoa produced the film.

In addition to Butler, Woon-A-Tai joins the previously announced cast of Vincent D’Onofrio, Zoë Kravitz, Regina King, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, Will Brill, Bad Bunny and Griffin Dunne.

Woon-A-Tai is a 22-year-old Oji-Cree First Nations actor who is coming off a busy Emmy season. The actor was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his breakthrough role on the FX television series Dog reservationhis first Emmy nomination and the first time a Native American has been nominated in that category. Additionally, he was nominated for two Critics Choice Awards for his portrayal of Bear Smallhill.

He also recently completed work in War by Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland for A24 in the lead role of Ray Mendoza. He worked alongside Cosmo Jarvis, Noah Centineo, Will Poulter, Charles Melton and Kit Connor in the film, which is scheduled for release in 2025.

Woon-A-Tai’s additional credits include the coming-of-age tragedy To integrate opposite Emily Hampshire and Maddie Ziegler, and the independent thriller Only the good survivewritten and directed by Dutch Southern. He also starred in A hell of a summer alongside Finn Wolfhard and Fred Hechinger.
