The Tipperary girl decided to get adventurous during her stay, sporting a new tattoo with the caption ‘unforgettable’.

One can only assume she is referring to the unforgettable summer she spent with Ireland’s Paralympic and Olympic teams in Paris this year, where we saw the Olympic team break their medal record with seven.

The women’s 4x400m team of Mawdsley, Sophie Becker, Phil Healy and Rhasidat Adeleke broke the national record but missed out on medals by a fraction of a second.

Mawdsley took it very badly to be pipped to fourth place in Paris.

Not only was she very hard on herself immediately afterward in the quartet’s emotional interview with David Gillick, but she reiterated how responsible she felt during a recent podcast appearance.

Speaking to The 2 Johnnies, she explained: “I thought I was second, but we all took over at the same time.

“When I thought about it, I said to myself: ‘it’s not the end of the world’, because it takes four people and not just me.

“At that point I thought it was my fault that we had dropped from second to fourth, but in fact we had all taken over at the same time, which was a bit of a relief.

“I started crying on the track and then we went to thank the Irish fans for coming and I saw my parents and I was crying.

“My mom said, ‘You ran 49.14,’ so that was the fastest time I’ve ever run.

“But she could have told me I had broken a world record and it still wouldn’t have made any difference because I was so upset.

“We went to the interview and I was last because we go in order so it was Sophie (Becker), Rhasidat (Adeleke) and Phil (Healy).

“The girls were of course already upset and I was crying and saying, ‘No, I’ll be ready now.’

“As soon as David asked me a question, I disappeared.

“At the time I was very embarrassed, but looking back it’s good that people see that we don’t train every day for no reason.

“But to be honest, I had no idea we would be in this position. I really thought we would be at the back and fighting for sixth or seventh place.”

Fortunately, Mawdsley was able to end his season on a high note with a first place finish at the Galà dei Castelli in Switzerland, with an impressive time of 51.35 seconds.
