Former New York professor who held machete to journalist’s neck escalates rhetoric

The former New York university art professor, who notably planted a machete on a journalist’s neck, was caught chanting slogans calling for “slitting the master’s throat” at an anti-Israel rally last week.

Shellyne Rodriguez, who previously taught at Hunter College and the Cooper Union School of Art, spoke to a crowd Friday outside the Brooklyn Museum, the New York Post reported.

“Our ancestors… dreamed that we would slit the master’s throat,” Rodriguez chanted in the video, wearing a T-shirt that read, “The police are murdering people.”

“Our ancestors are horrified to see Black people, Latinos, Indigenous people, children of immigrants and Muslims joining the NYPD’s anti-slavery patrol and (inaudible) plantation guards in prisons and detention centers,” she said.

The crowd repeated each chant and applauded Rodriguez when she finished speaking, according to video footage of the rally.

Rodriguez was fired from Hunter College in 2023 after she was seen on video rushing from her apartment into the hallway where she held a machete to the throat of veteran New York Post reporter Reuven Fenton.

“Get the fuck out of my door or I’ll cut you up with this machete!” she shouted, holding the blade to the reporter’s throat, she told Fenton, the Post reported.

The reporter was seeking comment after Rodriguez lashed out at students sitting at a table with anti-abortion literature, which was caught on camera. She called the literature “fucking propaganda” before throwing items from the display.

After lunging at Fenton, Rodriguez followed him into the street and chased him with a machete, the New York Police Department said.

She eventually pleaded guilty to harassment and threats and was ordered to undergo behavioral therapy for 13 months.

Rodriguez was quickly fired from Hunter College. In an email to students, she blamed the firing on “fascism,” according to an Instagram post from Cooper Union’s Students for Justice in Palestine chapter.

Months later, Rodriguez was fired from her teaching position at Cooper Union for making anti-Israel remarks while participating in a panel calling for divestment from the Jewish state.
