$76 billion worth of vacation packages at risk of theft

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — You find the perfect gift. It will be delivered to your home; then it is stolen by a porch pirate.

A new one CNET report reveals an estimated $76 billion packages may be at risk of theft this holiday season. It’s an average value of $291 per person in packages shipped.

“It’s a crime of opportunity,” he said CNET’s Dashia Milden“If you’re not at home and no one is watching your house and they’re used to that, they can walk up to you, grab your package and go.”

According to CNET’s survey, 17% of people say they have been victims of package theft in the past year, while 8% say they have caught an attempted package theft. The survey also shows that 71% of people will take steps to prevent package theft.

“The majority of shoppers rely on package delivery technology, and those are basically your alerts that you get to let you know, ‘Hey, your package has been shipped,’ and they totally let you know when it’s at your house arrived,” says Milden. “I want to emphasize one thing: if you are going to use a camera, make sure it actually has package detection.”

If a package is stolen, it must be reported to the police.

SafeWise, which studies porch pirate trends, estimates that it does 260,000 cases of package theft every day. Actual losses will be approximately $16 billion in 2023.

According to the study, New York City is the worst city for package theft, followed by Philadelphia, Chicago and Washington, DC. Additionally, Cleveland, Ohio completes the top ten.
