EAM Jaishankar calls for an effective, efficient and representative UN

New York (US), September 29 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stressed that large parts of the world cannot be left behind when it comes to solving key issues and stressed the need for an effective, efficient and representative United Nations.

Jaishankar’s remarks came during his speech at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Saturday.

He said: “The world order is inherently pluralistic and diverse. The UN started with 51 members; today we are 193. The world has changed profoundly, as have its concerns and its opportunities. it is essential that the UN be the central platform for finding common ground. And this certainly cannot be the case, remaining anachronistic.

He added: “Large parts of the world cannot be left behind when it comes to deciding the key issues of our time. An effective and efficient UN, a UN more representative and fit for purpose in the contemporary era is essential. » the importance of global cooperation, the EAM noted that through sharing experiences and pooling resources, the world can be transformed. “Let us therefore send a clear message from this session of the UNGA: we are determined not to be left behind. Jaishankar, during his speech, also highlighted the concerns of the Global South and said that development plans and targets of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are drifting away. He said: “We are gathered here at a difficult time. The world has not yet recovered from the ravages of the Covid pandemic. The war in Ukraine is in its third year. The conflict in Gaza is taking on wider ramifications. In the South, development plans have been derailed and the SDG objectives are moving backwards.
