Mooretown Lighthouse ready for use

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) — The Mooretown area of Shreveport has a new resource ready to handle any natural disaster or emergency. The community lighthouse is officially complete.

“So often where we serve, we are the first to lose power and the last to get it back,” said the Rev. Theron Jackson, pastor of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. “So it’s about making our community more resilient, and it’s absolutely free.”

The Mooretown Community Lighthouse at Morning Star Missionary Baptist is ready for use in an emergency.

“What we wanted to do is make sure that communities like ours, who already face crises on a daily basis, will also be prepared when natural disasters occur,” Jackson said. “So it’s about making sure there’s power when there’s no light in our community.” »

The lighthouse is equipped with solar power and a backup water supply.

There was an official ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sunday.

Additional community lighthouses will be added in Caddo and Bossier parishes. Community centers are designed to serve as neighborhood response centers for power outages and emergencies.

“So that when there is no power, our power is restored and you can plug in devices,” Jackson said.

“What’s really unique about what we do is that we care for and call out to people who already live in our community. … That’s why we will be proactive in the event of a power outage.”
