New Alachua County Courthouse Complex Gets $100,000 Statue

New Alachua County Courthouse Complex Gets 0,000 Statue

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – The new courthouse complex Alachua County leaders want to build will have some extras.

Alachua County leaders are calling on artists to apply to build a justice-themed sculpture outside the new courthouse.

It will be located right next to the Alachua County Criminal Courthouse on Main Street in Gainesville.

The complex will house some judicial operations, the registry of the courts and court security. The architectural and technical plans are still being worked on.

County leaders are setting aside up to $100,000 to pay for the sculpture. It is part of the push to have art in public places when there is a new construction project or renovation.

“$100,000 is a significant amount of money,” said Gina Peebles, the assistant county manager. “So we want an experienced artist who has done this kind of work before. We certainly don’t want to be your first piece.”

The art council chooses the three best artists who make a sketch of the statue. The provincial commission will then select who will design it.

Construction is expected to be completed in 2026.

The deadline for artists to apply is December 4, 2024, at 2 p.m
