“Nobody ever thinks you’re going to go to the gym on Monday morning and potentially be in the same building as a dead body,” said Elizabeth Len, a member of Planet Fitness.

Len said her Monday morning workout started like any other day, until she noticed a foul odor.

“I was sniffing and trying not to look crazy, but something smells awful in here,” Len said.

The odor came from one of the tanning rooms, where 39-year-old Derek Sink was found dead.

“The first thing that came to my mind was the lack of attention from the Planet Fitness staff, which is quite disappointing because it could have been avoided,” Len said.

According to Sink’s family, he went under the tanning bed at the gym on Friday, but was not found until Monday morning. They said he was struggling with drugs and a needle was found in his room.

His aunt said they reported him missing on Friday and he was wearing an ankle bracelet, which helped police find him.

During the three days Sink was considered missing, the gym remained open.

“The tanning bed has a door, I believe, but still, why aren’t we concerned that the tanning bed may have been closed for three days?” Len said.

The cause of Sink’s death has not yet been determined.

In a statement on Tuesday, a Planet Fitness spokesperson said they are working closely with the local franchise to ensure they are adhering to these brand protocols.
